A generator is a reliable source of power. However, be aware of these issues:
- Most National parks ban the use of generators
- The generator is noisy
As you would be well aware, there has been an explosion of portable generators onto the market these past few years, and the quality of many of these are not all that crash hot. We like to run a few very simple rules when using with battery chargers (lets face it, these are the most commonly run devices of any portable generator in a camper trailer set up):
-
Buy ONLY a pure sine, reputable brand generator when operating switch mode power supply systems (such as smart battery chargers).
-
NEVER let the generator run out of fuel.
-
Always insist on installing a quality surge guard (as you would use on your home PC), whenever a portable generator is being used on ANY electrical device.
-
Always run the generator up to operating temperature before switching on the load.
We don’t cover Generator damage under warranty, and the sad thing is that it does happen – (there is no such thing as “Generator Proof” which is a term bandied around from time to time). The best solution is for customers to be “Generator Savy”.
We have used the Hondas and recommend it. We have not used the Kipor, but a lot of customers have and have had no difficulty.
